The Many Shades of Tourmaline

The word ‘Tourmaline” is derived from the Tamil word, Turmali, which literally means multicoloured. This rich stone is world-famous for its durability, and multiple hues found across the globe.
It is easily available in some of the other colours and can be accessed by anyone, regardless of their financial bracket. Its metaphysical attributes are surreal, which makes it a good stone to keep close to you, regardless of what colour variation you have. So without further ado, let’s dive into the colourful world of Tourmaline!
Unlike many other gemstones, Tourmaline isn’t made up of one mineral and is a cluster of various minerals.
Differing degrees of compositions of what makes the stone, is also what gives it different colours. Many of these popular variations of Tourmaline have their own trade names, setting them apart from other stones.

Rubellite

Famous for its intense red/pink hues, Rubellite is a stone that has stunning looks and makes for eye-catching jewellery. Trace amounts of manganese are what gives it the famous pink colour. Light pink stones can sometimes be sold as Rubellites, but they are just pink Tourmaline.

Indicolite

This is a variety of tourmaline that ranges between green and dark blue in terms of shade, with each stone naturally found having different compositions. They are very rare in nature and are also the hardest variety of Tourmaline.

Paraiba Tourmaline

This neon blue variety is the most exotic and desired sub-brand of the Tourmaline family. It was found in the late 80s in Paraiba, Brazil. Because of its exotic hue and high demand, it happens to be the most expensive Tourmaline variety.

Chrome Tourmaline

Regardless of the name, this variety of Tourmaline isn’t chrome in colour. It shows an intense green hue and is rarely found in large sizes. Most natural specimens of Chrome Tourmaline, weigh less than a single carat.

Watermelon Tourmaline

This stone looks exactly what it sounds like. It is bi-coloured, with pink and green shades. It is generally pink or red in the centre, with a green top layer, or vice versa. Regardless, they are cut into pieces to showcase the watermelon shades.
